In a major breakthrough 60 years in the making that could someday lead to unlimited clean energy, scientists at the National Ignition Facility achieved fusion ignition on Dec. 5. Alex Zylstra ’09 was the principal experimentalist.

Selected from nearly 3,000 applicants, Solomon Olshin ’23 and Qingjie (Bob) Zeng ’18 will join the 2023-24 cohort of Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University in Beijing next August.

Robert E. “Bob” Tranquada ’51, former chair of the �鶹Ӱ�� Board of Trustees and former dean of the medical school at USC, passed away Sunday, December 4. He was 92.

�鶹Ӱ�� Trustee and alumnus Paul Eckstein and his wife, Florence, have pledged $1.2 million to establish a permanently endowed scholarship fund to support refugee students. It will honor Paul’s parents, Liese and Albert Eckstein.
