The Community Advisor (CA) position is critical to the success of PAYS. The CA supports students primarily while they are in residence at Walker Hall. The CA has primary responsibility for the safety and well-being of PAYS students when they are in the residence hall. In a typical day, the CA will spend the afternoons and evenings with students engaged in activities. Much of the CA’s time will be spent planning and preparing for weekly field trips and evening activities. Past activities have included a PAYS talent show, birthday celebrations, tie-dye, karaoke, sports activities, a dance and trips to the Village.
Successful applicants will have a strong academic record and an open spirit that makes their contribution uniquely powerful. It is also preferable that the CA have an interest in and/or experience working with high school students. Educational experience is especially helpful.
The CA is a role model and a mentor to PAYS scholars. For this reason, it is critical that the CA maintains professionalism and exhibits good judgment. The CA must remain sub-free throughout PAYS. The CA will also be expected to assist in disciplinary and emergency situations or where conflict resolution is required.
During the 2024-25 academic year, the CA will remain in contact with their PAYS students. The CA can also elect to work for PAYS as a college advisor to seniors and/or by participating in college planning workshops during the fall and spring semesters. There might also be opportunities to tutor PAYS students. Preference will be given to applicants who can offer this important continuity.
