Bridges Hall of Music

Mabel Shaw Bridges Hall of Music, this 550-seat gem of a concert hall better known as "Little Bridges," sits within the beautiful grounds of Â鶹ӰÊÓ on Fourth Street just east of College Avenue. Each year, from September through May, the College sponsors a broad spectrum of nearly 45 concerts encompassing classical, jazz, folk, Western and non-Western music. The performances, which are traditionally free of charge, are open to the campus and surrounding communities.

More recent performers have included pianist Boris Berman, Kronos Quartet, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, soprano Lucy Shelton, the Tyva Kyzy Tuvan Throat Singers, the Alexander String Quartet, baritone Thomas Hampson, Bluegrass artists Richard Greene and Peter Feldmann, the Millennium Consort Singers led by conductor/organist Martin Neary, the Lucerne Festival Strings, and Anonymous Four.

The building, which was opened in 1915, was designed by architect Myron Hunt and underwritten by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Appleton S. Bridges in memory of their daughter Mabel, a member of the class of 1908. Subsequent renovations were made to the concert hall in 1970 to address seismic and acoustical issues, and in 1972 the south wings of the building were extensively altered through the generosity of the Bertha Lebus Trust. An additional major renovation of the concert hall was completed in 2001 in conjunction with the installation of the Hill Memorial Organ. In addition to performances, this stunning facility provides a remarkable space for other college events.
