Welcome to the Mathematics and Statistics Department
We welcome any potential math majors to the department. If you haven't declared math yet but would like to get emails about our events, please email William McGuire with your full name and class year. If you are a potential math major and would like to be on our poster, please submit a high resolution photo to William early in the fall semester.
2024-2025 Liaisons
Elliott Abel ’25
Howdy! My name is Elliott Abel. I’m a senior at Pomona from Temple, TX, and a math major on the statistics track. I’m interested in almost any kind of math/stats, and I’ve dabbled in manifold learning, neural networks, and data science research. I look forward to being your liaison this year, especially meeting everyone at department events!
Outside of class, I lifeguard, hike, play disc golf, and spectate sports. One of my great joys in life is mornings with coffee and pastries. When I am not in Estella, I’m in the RITG Lab at ITS. (Ask me about High Performance Computing!) Feel free to say hi if you see me around, I’m always happy to chat!
Emrys King ’25
Hello folks! My name is Emrys (he/him), and I am thrilled to be a liaison for the math and stats department this year. I was raised in Madison, Wisconsin, went to high school in Birmingham, Alabama, and currently spend my time away from school in Chicago. I’m a senior math major on the general track, though I'll probably end up satisfying the statistics track as well. I'm also double majoring in Spanish!
My favorite part of the math department is its community — and I’m so glad you’re a part of it! I’d love to talk to you about course selection, research, summer opportunities, advising, a fun problem, life in Claremont, or anything that springs to mind. I hope to see you soon at a math department event or in the halls of Estella!
Chloe Marple ’26
Hi guys! I’m Chloe, and I’m a junior on the pure math track. My main interest is in topology (I’ll tell you all about knots and 3-manifolds if you let me), but I’m also interested in functional analysis and honestly all of pure math. I love the community in the math department, and I’m excited to be a liaison this year. After college, I want to get a PhD in math. Outside of math, I like learning languages. If you come to Oldenborg language tables, you are likely to see me there.
If you see me around, feel free to stop and chat (about math or non-math topics)–I hope to see you at a math department event soon.
Echo Zhang ’25
Hi everyone! I’m Echo, a senior on the General Math track. I’m from Texas and wasn’t sure what to expect when I came to Pomona. I didn’t even think about majoring in math until my sophomore year, and I never would have imagined that I could do it. One reason I decided to stay in the major was the collaboration and people in the community. Some of the friends I made in math classes were the best parts of my college experience! Math is an amazing tool that can open a lot of doors. This major has given me opportunities that I am excited to share, and I’m always down to grab a meal and talk about anything math or non-math related. I’m excited to be a liaison and help make this a community for everyone!
