Updates to ID Swipe Building Access

Dear Â鶹ӰÊÓ Community:

We are writing to provide an update on the new campus building access plan that was announced on August 21. The purpose of this plan is to enhance the safety of our community while at the same time ensuring that our buildings are as accessible to our Pomona and Claremont Colleges communities as possible. We truly appreciate your patience and feedback during the implementation of these changes.

At Pomona, we have previously run different access models during the academic year; only in the summer did we rely on universal ID swipe or key access to academic, administrative and support buildings. The main change this fall has been to expand this summer model to the fall and spring semesters. Because there are many individual building access plans and iterations that have been submitted over the years, moving to a campus-wide plan has created some disruption and inconvenience. We will continue to do our best to respond to those individual access problems that were reported to us.

Effective today, based on feedback, we are implementing the following revision:

ID swipe access for students is expanded to seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. for all Pomona Academic buildings.

More specifically:

  • All Â鶹ӰÊÓ students will have access to all academic buildings during this time period.
  • All cross-registered 5C non-Pomona students will have access to all academic buildings during this time period.
  • Faculty will continue to have access to all academic buildings all the time – no change.
  • Access to the residence halls is unchanged – that is secured and accessed via student ID card swipe.

Our hope is this revision addresses any inconvenience that the plan created. Building representatives such as academic coordinators and department heads are encouraged to continue to use the to ask for adjustments specific to their building. As has been the case, adjustments for academic buildings can range from making minor changes to the new building access timings/privileges to more significant changes to the new plan for your building.

The administration respects and will support unique building access plans developed by faculty and staff colleagues working in our academic buildings. As part of our work to iron out any remaining wrinkles, we will be reaching out to the building representatives to make sure that each access plan is consistent with the needs of the departments.

We want to acknowledge the helpful feedback we received from the Faculty Executive Committee over the last few days and we appreciate your feedback as we work to implement this new approach.
