Join us for a screening and lecture by Â鶹ӰÊÓ professor of politics Tom Le, "Godzilla: The Art of Disaster Politics."
Due to government censorship during the US occupation of Japan, the Japanese people were unable to openly discuss nuclear weapons in public politics. In the absence of truthful engagement with the nuclear bomb, Godzilla filled the void and gave form to the incomprehensibly destructive violation of bodies and the environment. After a screening of Shin Godzilla (2016), Pomona politics professor Tom Le examines how the film director Hideaki Anno continues his critique of government power, militarism, and environmental politics in this newest installment of the Godzilla franchise. This program accompanies the Benton’s current exhibition Each Day Begins with the Sun Rising: Four Artists from Hiroshima.
