DR. V.S. RAMACHANDRAN
V.S. Ramachandran is Director of the and Distinguished Professor in the Psychology Department and Neurosciences Program at the University of California, San Diego. Author of A Brief Tour of Human Consciousness, Phantoms in the Brain, and The Tell Tale Brain: A Neuroscientists’s Quest for What Makes Us Human, he has been called “the Marco Polo of Neuroscience” (Richard Dawkins).
BONNIE BAINBRIDGE COHEN
Movement artist, researcher, educator, therapist and developer of the Body-Mind Centering® approach to movement and consciousness; author of the book, Sensing, Feeling and Action and creator of the DVD series Embodied Anatomy. BMC® is an exploration of how we embody our body systems, tissues and cells as well as our developmental movement patterns and embryological development. In 1973 she founded The School for Body-Mind Centering®. Her work has influenced the fields of bodywork, movement, dance, yoga, body psychotherapy, childhood education and many other body-mind disciplines. She is the author of the book, Sensing, Feeling and Action and currently has six DVD sets in her Embodied Anatomy series.
DR. EMILY CROSS
2001 graduate of 鶹Ӱ, dancer and researcher who investigates how the brain is impacted by action experience and learning; currently sharing faculty positions at Bangor University in Wales and Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, she has worked extensively with dancers to study how action expertise is manifest at behavioral and brain levels.
Her primary research is on how our brains are impacted by action experience and learning, and how action expertise is manifest at behavioural and brain levels. Working with dancers is an area of particular personal interest. Past and current funders of her research include the National Institutes of Health, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Dutch Science Foundation, the European Commission and the Economic and Social Research Council (UK).
DAVID MICHALEK
Visual artist who takes the concept and techniques of portraiture as the starting points for the creation of his works, on both a large and small-scale, in a range of mediums; his hyper slow-motion video portraits “Slow Dancing” (Bridges Auditorium façade) and “Figure Studies” (鶹Ӱ Museum of Art), will be on exhibit throughout the Symposium.
