G Douglas Barrett's We Connect Cage with Eastman
The exceptional oratory work of student-, faculty-, and staff-speakers that participated in BESHT proceedings will be rewarded with honorary TMFAs (ToastMasters of Fine Arts) degrees. Join us for a toasty closing reception and ceremony!
Plus, we're pleased to announce that G Douglas Barrett's We Connect Cage with Eastman (originally scheduled for 11/1, but cancelled because of complications stemming from Hurricane Sandy) will be presented at this final BESHT event!
Barett will present a re-interpretation of Julius Eastman's June 1975 performance of John Cage's Song Books. Performing as part of the SEM Ensemble at the University of Buffalo, Eastman infuriated Cage by using the open-ended work as a platform for delivering a lecture on "a new system of love." Eastman's work arguably marked a post-Cageian shift in the performance of experimental, indeterminate music.
Special thanks to our volunteer performers, Alexis Disselkoen, Juliette Walker, and Sarah Williams, who performed the voice of Prof. Padu Paga.
